People-watching in Verona
Piazza delle Erbe is a typical tourist spot during the day, but in the evening, it's taken over by the locals. Many residents sit and enjoy their favorite aperitif, Spritz al Aperol, on the terrace of places like Osteria Veronese. Later in the evening, the nightlife shifts around the corner to Sottoriva, a long alley under an arcade that runs parallel to the river, an area full of bars, lounges, restaurants, and pizzerias that stay open until the early hours. The largest crowd of outdoor diners can be found in the heart of the city at the massive Piazza Bra, where dozens of grand cafes invite you to sit and enjoy a cappuccino with a view of the 2,000-year-old Roman Arena. Touristic pilgrimage
A pilgrimage in Verona naturally begins at Julia's house, the Casa di Giulia, on Via Capello, a romantic mansion that may or may not be the real thing, but that doesn't really matter. Tourists like to have their photos taken here or scribble some amorous graffiti on the wall. Of course, you must not miss a visit to the breathtaking Roman Arena, where Europe's largest opera performances take place every summer, and many contemporary pop music stars grace the Arena's open-air stage during the season. I've been told that the atmosphere of an opera performance here is incomparable. Verona offers visitors a serious dose of culture at any time of the year, with a visit to the magnificent collection of paintings by Titian, Tintoretto, Canaletto, and Tiepolo at the Museo Castelvecchio, an imposing medieval fortress. Verona also offers a variety of contemporary cultural opportunities, including the not-to-be-missed Byblos Art Gallery on Corso Cavour. To end the day on a romantic note, visit the Giardini Giusti, one of the most beautiful Italian Renaissance gardens.
